Floating bus stops – what NFBUK have been doing to raise concerns over these designs in cycle lanes
Wednesday 1 July 2026
2:00 pm to 3:00pm
Zoom
Many Visionary members supported the National Federation of the Blind of the UK’s (NFBUK) petition to halt floating bus stops. We will share the work we have done to raise awareness of the safety and accessibility concerns associated with these designs and the evidence gathered on this issue.
We will also explain why the new Statutory Government Guidance on floating bus stops (opens window) published by the Department for Transport and Active England in January 2026 does not resolve the serious safety and accessibility concerns raised by blind people (see BBC London Evening News Floating Bus Stops 27 January 2026 | YouTube, 2 mins and 45 sec).
Sarah Gayton, NFBUKs Street Access Campaign Coordinator and Vincent Stops, former London Travel Watch employee, will present what we have been doing and our evidence. While Sarah Leadbetter, a Guide Dog user and Andrew Hodgson, a long white cane user will both explain how floating bus stops have impacted their lives, and how they have taken an active campaign to raise concerns over them.
We are keen to discuss these concerns with Visionary members and discuss how we can further campaign on this issue during this online session.
