About Us
Sight Loss Shropshire is a successful charity supporting people living with sight loss across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin. Whilst we pride ourselves on providing a varied programme of opportunities and events for adults, we wish to significantly increase our offer for children and young people up to 25 years of age.
About the Role
Sight Loss Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin Council have created a partnership to encourage and enable visually impaired children and young people to take up the same opportunities as their sighted peers through dedicated and supported activities. The project will have a focus on 16- to 25-year-olds.
Our Children and Young People Activities Coordinator will arrange events and activities for children and young adults with vision impairments (some with other additional needs) and their families, with the aim of supporting their emotional and social wellbeing. The role will focus on non-statutory services outside the school curriculum and young adults not in formal education.
This is a rewarding role and the candidate will be self-motivated, creative and have an empathy with children, young people and families.
Location
This post will be based at our partner’s headquarters at the Telford & Wrekin Council offices at Darby House, Telford, and will sit alongside specialist services for children/young people with a sensory impairment. Sight Loss Shropshire are based at the Lantern, Harlescott, Shrewsbury, where some meetings will be held. The post holder is expected to travel across the county, including both Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin. Travel expenses will be reimbursed; a full driving licence is required.
Salary
£14.00 per hour (£14,560 actual salary per annum).
Hours of Work
20 hours per week on a flexible basis. Work on 2 weekend days per month and some evenings are expected.
Term
This post is grant funded initially for 2 years, with a potential to become permanent.
What’s involved
- Creating, attending and managing events and activities
- Supporting children and their families at events and motivating young people to attend
- Promote and facilitate the social inclusion of children and young people with visual impairment by supporting their personal, social and emotional well-being and development
- Develop self-advocacy skills in children and young people with visual impairment
- Deliver social inclusion services in a multi-disciplinary context through close liaison with colleagues in the Sensory Inclusion Service and partnership work
What We’re Looking For
- Experience of working with children and young people who require opportunities to develop skills to promote their inclusion
- NVQ3 in Childcare or equivalent
- A minimum of 5 GSCE/O Level equivalents (grades 5+, A-C) including English
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Creativity to facilitate activities with visually impaired children and young adults
- Ability to participate in sports such as climbing, canoeing, zip wiring, swimming etc.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small team
- Patience, enthusiasm, confidence, sensitivity and flexibility
