Vision Support Barrow & District are pleased to introduce our new Peer Mentor service.
Vision Support Barrow & District’s (opens window) new service has been created to ensure our clients not only receive practical guidance, but also feel understood, heard and supported by someone with lived experience of visual impairment. The Peer Mentor will offer personalised mentoring sessions, creating a safe and non-judgemental space to talk about the impact of sight loss and the challenges that can come with it.
For someone adjusting to sight loss, speaking with a Peer Mentor who truly understands the emotional and practical realities can be transformative. It reduces isolation, builds trust, and reassures individuals they are not alone in their experience. The mentor is not just offering guidance they are sharing insight drawn from real-life experience, demonstrating that confidence, independence and wellbeing are achievable.
For many, seeing someone who has navigated similar challenges can inspire hope and possibility. It shifts the focus from what has been lost to what can be achieved. The Peer Mentor role strengthens our person-centred approach and reinforces our commitment to inclusion, empowerment and equal access for people living with visual impairment.
At the heart of this new role is the belief that lived experience matters, strengthening the voice of lived experience within our organisation and creating a more supportive, understanding community for those we serve. By sharing insight, strategies and encouragement, the Peer Mentor will help people adjust to sight loss in a way that promotes wellbeing, inclusion and equal access to opportunities.
