VIDA Training and Gary Eady Computer Training, in partnership with TAVIP (Technology Association of Visually Impaired People) are delivering an online training course to help people with vision impairments fine-tune their employment skills and support them with their journey towards work.

Who is the course for?

This training course is specifically for people who:

  • Have a vision impairment
  • Use a screen reader such as Jaws, NVDA or SuperNova
  • Are a competent computer user with good keyboard skills
  • Are actively seeking employment but need some assistance
  • Are aged 18 or over.

The training course will be focused on providing people with the necessary knowledge, skills, abilities and support to assist them in their journey towards employment. The sessions will cover:

  • Existing barriers to finding work
  • Managing your condition/impairment
  • In-work expectations
  • Supportive employer schemes including Access to Work
  • Confidence, motivation and resilience
  • Where to find work
  • Disclosing your disability
  • Completing application forms
  • Writing an effective CV
  • Interview preparation and tips
  • Access Technology
  • Using Microsoft Office and the internet effectively and efficiently
  • Making best use of Smartphones and Apps
  • Troubleshooting and technical support
  • And much more!

Throughout the course, emphasis will be on both peer and personalised support. This will help to ensure that participants have increased knowledge and confidence, as well as being aware of where to find support should they need it in the future.

Sessions will be facilitated by Dave, Gary or Vicky using their unique and valuable mix of experience, knowledge and skills (and humour) to provide the perfect combination to support people on their journey back to work. Dave and Gary live and work with a vision impairment, Vicky is sighted with experience of working alongside and providing in work support for people with vision impairments.

The training course will run over 12 weeks and will consist of both group and one to one sessions.

The course is scheduled to start on Tuesday 4 May and is to be delivered on Tuesdays and Fridays of each week (depending on the topics being covered that week). Participants may also be requested to do some home learning between sessions to reinforce their learning.

The course sessions will be delivered remotely using the Zoom cloud meetings platform, making it accessible to everyone, no matter where they live in the UK.

The course is free for participants, however, if they are not already a TAVIP member, they will be asked to take out an annual membership costing just £10.

How to apply?

Applicants must live in the UK and meet the above 4 criteria (have a vision impairment, use a screen reader, are a competent computer user and are actively seeking work).

If this is the case, please email VIDA Training at training@vidatraining.co.uk to request an application form.

The closing date for applications is 9pm on Wednesday 7 April.

Due to only 8 places being available for this pilot training course, applicants will be shortlisted. Those who are shortlisted will then be invited to have an informal chat with us before places are confirmed. Informal chats will take place on Friday 16 and Monday 19 April over Zoom.
