Scots rugby legend Andy Nicol will share stories about his career as he hosts a charity fundraising evening in Aberdeen.

Nicol will join fans at a Sportsman dinner at the city’s Sandman Signature Hotel in November, which is being organised by North East Sensory Services (NESS). The BBC sports commentator will discuss the highlights of his rugby and TV careers spanning more than three decades, before taking questions from those attending. Audience members will also enjoy a three-course meal, with individual tickets costing £60 and tables of 10 available.

The event on Thursday 23 November 2023, is designed to raise funds for NESS, which supports thousands of blind and deaf people, and those with visual and hearing impairments, across Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Dundee, Angus and Moray. The charity’s main objective is to help people with sensory loss to live as independently as possible.

Nicol, who was born in Dundee, played for the British Lions and was capped 23 times for Scotland. He captained Scotland in 2000 when the team beat England 19–13 at Murrayfield, preventing England from achieving the Grand Slam. The star retired at the end of the 2002/03 season and went on to coach several rugby sevens teams as well as having a successful career in sports broadcasting.

Funds raised at the event will go towards the added value services that NESS provides, including its social groups and activities. These services compliment the charity’s statutory services and help people face and overcome challenges associated with sight or hearing loss.

There are several sponsorship opportunities as well as meet and greet packages.

For further information on sponsorship opportunities or to book tickets, please email Lorraine Middleton or email Susan McKay.

“I’m very much looking forward to heading to Aberdeen on 23 November for the charity Sportsman dinner in aid of NESS. This is a fantastic local charity that does wonderful work with people who need their services. I’m looking forward to raising as much money as we can on the evening.”

“Our Sportsman dinner will give people the opportunity to join rugby legend Andy Nicol for a fantastic evening of food and entertainment. We are delighted that Andy will attend to give an insight into his illustrious rugby and TV careers and we are grateful for his support. The event will raise vital funds for the services we offer to those with sensory loss. The aim of NESS is to ensure that anyone living with sensory impairment in the north east is given the support they need to live as independently as possible and have confidence to fully participate in society.”
