Help Shape the Future of Driving for People with Sight Loss
At Studio Exception, we believe the best way to create better products is to learn directly from people whose experiences are often excluded from the design process.
We are currently working with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) on a research project exploring the experiences of drivers living with sight loss and visual impairments. Our goal is to understand how vehicles can better support people whose vision has changed over time, helping them maintain confidence, independence and mobility for as long as possible.
To support this work, we are seeking an individual who currently drives, or who has only recently stopped driving, and who lives with a condition such as macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy or another visual impairment that affects their driving experience.
We are particularly interested in speaking with someone who lives in a rural area and ideally owns or regularly drives a vehicle such as a Land Rover, SUV or similar. However, we welcome conversations with anyone whose experiences may help us better understand the challenges and opportunities associated with driving and sight loss.
The research will involve spending time with the participant to understand their daily life, their relationship with driving, and the moments where their visual impairment creates barriers, frustrations or workarounds. This could include challenges such as driving at night, coping with glare, navigating unfamiliar environments, reading road signs, judging distances, or making decisions about when it feels safe to drive.
The participant’s experiences will directly inform the design thinking and innovation processes within JLR. By sharing their story, they will help shape future products and technologies that could benefit not only people with visual impairments, but a much wider range of drivers.
Studio Exception has partnered with JLR for more than six years, conducting inclusive research with people whose perspectives are often underrepresented in design. We call these individuals “Exceptions” – people whose needs reveal opportunities to create better experiences for everyone.
If you know someone who may be interested in participating, or would like to find out more about the project, please email Ruby Steel (opens window).
Together, we can help ensure the future of mobility works for more people.
