OpenSight’s New Strategy: Bringing Support Closer to Home

More than 60,000 people across Hampshire are living with sight loss, and as demand for support continues to grow, Hampshire-based charity OpenSight has launched an ambitious new three-year strategy to ensure more people across the county can access the right support, at the right time, and closer to where they live.
The strategy builds on a year of significant impact. During 2025–26, OpenSight supported more than 2,600 people aged between 1 and 105, delivering over 4,000 client contacts and running 268 group sessions. From low vision assessments and assistive technology support to social groups, family services and community outreach, OpenSight helps people adapt to sight loss, regain confidence and maintain independence.
A standout success has been the Community Connections pilot in Basingstoke, which demonstrated how bringing practical, personalised support directly into local communities makes services easier to access while helping people build stronger local connections.
Launched in April 2026, OpenSight’s new strategy is focused on four priorities:
- supporting more people more effectively.
- increasing awareness and accessibility.
- strengthening financial sustainability.
- investing in the staff and volunteers who make its work possible.
Central to the strategy is a new regional, place-based approach across North, Central & West, and South-East Hampshire.
Over the next three years, OpenSight will establish community hubs and satellite locations, offering local drop-ins, technology support, social activities and stronger partnerships with community organisations.
By bringing services closer to people and working collaboratively across Hampshire, OpenSight aims to ensure that everyone affected by sight loss has the opportunity to live independently, stay connected and thrive within their community.
