About the Role

In this role, you will be a vital member of the team working directly with people diagnosed with conditions causing sight loss. You will provide critical emotional support, advice and guidance face to face within an eye care setting and also remotely by phone. You will provide locum cover in clinics for periods of planned and unplanned absence for North East Eye Care Liaison Officers (ECLO) working across the four NHS Trusts of Newcastle Hospitals, South Tyneside & Sunderland, County Durham & Darlington and South Tees.  The service is currently delivered in 10 clinic locations spread from Cramlington to Northallerton, so the ability to travel at short notice across the region is important and may therefore ideally suit someone based in the centre of the North East to make travel times manageable. (Travel costs are reimbursed at a nationally agreed rate.)

When not providing clinic cover, you will be home based, delivering support to patients remotely across the region supporting the reach and capacity of our services. Good communication, and teamwork are vital to ensure seamless patient support. There will also be opportunities to participate in activities promoting the service across the region.

Each day you will support people affected by sight loss helping them to identify their needs, access information and make informed choices which enable and empower them to maintain their independence.

Who We’re Looking For

You will have experience of working with people with sight loss or a recent experience of working in a similar role, or other related health/social care role.

You will also have proven experience of delivering information and advice services working directly with the people you are supporting as well as maintaining professional relationships. To be successful in this role you must display impeccable record keeping skills.

You will also have good communication and organisation skills, together with being a proficient user of databases and Microsoft Office packages.

What We Offer

In exchange we offer a competitive salary, a stimulating and supportive working environment and a benefits package including:

  • 26 days holiday per year (plus bank holidays – pro rata), which increase with service
  • Excellent pension schemes
  • RNIB Rewards – Our employee discounts platform gives you access to offers at over 800 in-store and online retailers
  • In-house training and development opportunities

As an RNIB ECLO, you will also complete the RNIB & City University ‘Eye Clinic Support Studies’ qualification: essential for the role, access to Clinical Supervision, peer support and the opportunity to support RNIB’s priority of “no diagnosis without support”.
