Denbies Wine Estate was chosen for the tree planting as the venue holds a 100-year-old historic connection with the charity. The charity’s first President, Lord Ashcombe, lived there in 1922, and last week Sensory Services by Sight for Surrey attended with their current President, The Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey, Michael More-Molyneux. Giving him a helping hand was Clare Burgess, CEO of Sensory Services by Sight for Surrey, Mary Da-Silva-Skinner and Steve Wherry, Trustees from the charity, and Cadet, Oliver Bates, who supports The Lord-Lieutenant at functions and events.

“The Queen’s Green Canopy is a wonderful initiative that encourages the planting of healthy native trees. Being outdoors and surrounded by nature is brilliant for your physical and mental health, so we wanted to be part of this commemorative initiative.”

Sensory Services by Sight for Surrey is a charity that supports over 8,000 people who are blind, vision impaired, Deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing in Surrey.

The tree is planted in a corner of the beautiful estate close to the A25 with a special commemorative plaque detailing the date and reasoning behind its planting.

Plaque on tree says "This apple tree was planted by Sensory Services by Sight for Surrey with the Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey and our President Michael More-Molyneux, for The Queen's Green Canopy. Friday 24th February 2023.

The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is an initiative that began in May 2021 in the United Kingdom in honour of the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022. The campaign encourages the planting of healthy native trees that will thrive, enhancing our environment and the landscape for generations to come. To help the environment and make local areas greener, people are being urged to plant trees across the United Kingdom to create a lasting legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership. The QGC was due to conclude in December – the end of the Jubilee year. However, as the official tree planting season in the United Kingdom is from October to March, the initiative will now be extended to include the full tree planting season, beginning in October 2022 and concluding in March 2023.
