Work carried out by Visionary, alongside RNIB, Thomas Pocklington Trust and the Macular Society, has made headlines in the Evening Standard for collaborate work with the UK Health Security Agency to support accessible COVID-19 testing for blind and partially sighted people.

Building on previous work around support with taking PCR tests through the By My Eyes app, partially sighted users can now benefit from live video assistance from NHS Test and Trace staff to help guide them through how to order, use and register results for lateral flow tests.

Opportunity to get involved

Going forward, the focus of the collaboration is shifting towards evaluating other testing products which may be even more accessible to blind and partially sighted people, both for COVID-19 and other diseases which may arise in the future.

We currently have support from Mathew Horspool of Torch Trust to help represent the Visionary network along with Lucy Williams (Visionary). Matthew has now decided that the time has come for him to hand over this responsibility to someone else. We are therefore looking for a blind or partially sighted staff member from a Visionary member or national partner who would like to take on this important role. Meetings usually take place once a fortnight during a lunchtime and last no longer than an hour, with occasional extra meetings as the need arises.

For more information about this and to register your interest please email Lucy, who can also put you in contact with Matthew for an informal conversation about this if you wish.
